“You deserve to be well looked after”
Our family was so thankful of the care my mother-in-law, Florence Landreth, received at Rotary Hospice. As her health declined and the hospice was recommended, we told her, “Florence, you deserve to be really well looked after.” It was the best decision; we all felt embraced in care.
It was a contrast to my own mother’s death in 1986. At the time, I was a young mom with two kids (under four) and my husband, a firefighter, worked shifts. My mom was fighting and eventually passed away from ovarian cancer. As an only child and having lost my dad the prior year I was her sole support. As a registered nurse, I felt an obligation to care for her. Had there been a hospice, the experience would have been so much better; I could have been her daughter and not her caregiver.
The care my mother-in-law received at Rotary Hospice was priceless, yet it cost her nothing – thanks to community fundraising*.
On Sunday, June 6th I will Hike for Hospice in memory of my mother, my mother-in-law, and all the other mothers who deserve to be well looked after at the end of their life. Please consider doing the same!
